Tension Lift Frames

Overview

Tension Lift Frames (TLF) and Coiled Tubing Lift Frames (CTLF).

ICON’s Tension Lift Frames (TLFs) are engineered lifting systems used to safely manage loads and maintain a controlled working window during offshore wireline, slickline, e-line and coiled tubing operations. The frames are designed to operate on floating drilling rigs where vessel motion, dynamic loading and interface control are critical to safe and efficient execution.

Tension Lift Frames provide a stable interface between the rig lifting system and surface pressure control equipment (PCE), reducing uncontrolled movement and improving load management during intervention and well servicing activities. ICON’s designs are grounded in offshore execution experience and have been deployed across a wide range of rig types and operating environments globally since 1997.

The product family includes standard Tension Lift Frames (TLF) and Coiled Tubing Lift Frames (CTLF), configured for wireline and coiled tubing intervention operations across varying load cases, rig layouts and interface requirements. Where heave compensation is also required, ICON’s ARTP range of heave compensated tension lift frames extends this capability further.

Key Features / Benefits

Designed for safety, speed, and efficiency.

ICON’s Tension Lift Frames are engineered to deliver safe, controlled and efficient lifting during offshore wireline and coiled tubing operations, with configurations tailored to rig layout, load requirements and operational constraints.

  • Optimised spreader beam design

Spreader beam configurations are designed to maximise headroom and functional clearance, supporting efficient lifting and intervention operations. Standard 6ft and wide 8ft options available.

  • Custom winch systems

Integrated winch arrangements are engineered to deliver controlled lifting with minimal spooling offset from well centre, improving precision and load control.

  • Safe wireless controls

Wireless control systems allow winches to be operated from the drill floor or lift frame, reducing personnel exposure and improving operational safety.

  • Modular, configurable design

Modular components enable flexible configuration, easier transport and faster rig-up while minimising deck space requirements.

  • Robust structural load paths

Frames are designed with continuous structural load paths to enhance reliability under offshore dynamic loading conditions.

  • Familiar rig interfaces

Standard drilling and intervention interfaces support rapid integration with existing rig equipment and crew procedures.

  • Efficient flowhead interface

Lower spreader beam interfaces can connect directly to pre-installed flowheads, reducing stack-up height and saving offshore time.

  • Onshore trial rig-up and clash checking

ICON’s purpose-built test tower at its Carlisle yard allows clients to trial rig-up coiled tubing lift frames and associated pressure control equipment in a controlled onshore environment before mobilising offshore. PCE stack-ups and handling methods can be resolved, clash checks completed and crew training undertaken prior to critical path rig time, delivering significant cost and schedule savings.

  • Certified offshore performance

Systems are independently verified to meet applicable offshore industry standards and project requirements.

Lift Frame Ancillary Equipment

Ancillary equipment and accessories.

ICON supplies a range of optional ancillary equipment to customise the features and functionality of Tension Lift Frames, Coiled Tubing Lift Frames and Compensated Coiled Tubing Lift Frames.

Available ancillary items include:

  • Primary and secondary PCE handling winches, hydraulic or pneumatic, zone rated, with local and remote control, sized to meet specific load and speed requirements
  • Man-rider winches for personnel safety when working at heights within the lift frame during heaving conditions
  • Hydraulic Power Units (HPUs), standalone units for ARTP control system pilot pressure and emergency fluid top-up, supplied in offshore rated shipping skids for permanent or temporary rig installation
  • Access platforms to provide a safe working environment for personnel operating within the lift frame
  • CT Injector Head Jacking Table, fits to ICON’s coiled tubing lift frame, supporting the CT injector head during operations and allowing vertical and horizontal adjustment when changing out BHA/tool strings
  • Wireline manipulator arms, designed and fabricated to ICON’s specifications for wireline operations within the lift frame

All ancillary equipment is designed and tested to applicable offshore standards including DNV 2.22, DNV OS-E101 and ABS CDS where required.

Tension Lift Frames (TLF)

Frame Variants

ICON’s lift frame range covers three variants to suit different intervention methods and operating requirements.

All variants are available for hire, purchase or as part of a broader project scope. Contact ICON to discuss your project specific requirements.

Tension Lift Frame (TLF)

Standard wireline, slickline and e-line configuration for floating rig intervention operations. Available in 350t and 500t load ratings with standard 6ft or wide 8ft spreader beam options. The most widely deployed variant in ICON’s fleet.

Coiled Tubing Lift Frame (CTLF)

Coiled tubing specific configuration designed for CT intervention operations. Interfaces are suited to coiled tubing equipment and PCE stack-ups, with winch and spreader beam geometry optimised for CT rig-up.

Heave Compensated Coiled Tubing Lift Frame (CCTLF)

Integrates passive heave compensation for motion-sensitive coiled tubing operations on floating rigs. See the Heave Compensation Solutions page for full details on ICON’s ARTP range.
