In early May 2025, ICON welcomed a Petrobras delegation to its Perth office as part of an ongoing subsea decommissioning collaboration between the two companies. Petrobras, Brazil’s national energy company, sent a team travelling from Brazil specifically for the visit — a sign of the weight both sides place on the relationship.
What the visit covered
ICON and Exceed Energy jointly presented several perspectives on subsea decommissioning challenges facing operators in both Australia and Brazil. The two countries sit at different points on the decommissioning curve, but both face a similar underlying problem: ageing offshore infrastructure that eventually has to come out of the water safely, on budget, and in line with tightening regulatory expectations. Sharing perspectives across two active offshore basins gives both ICON and Petrobras a broader view of what’s worked, and what hasn’t, elsewhere in the world.
Part of a broader decommissioning partnership
This visit sits within a wider pattern of ICON building out its decommissioning capability. A few months later, in August 2025, ICON formalised a collaboration with Exceed Energy to jointly pursue Australasian decommissioning work — combining ICON’s facilities removal expertise with Exceed’s well abandonment and well management background. The Petrobras visit reflects the same underlying focus: bringing together complementary skill sets from different parts of the world to help operators plan and execute complex decommissioning campaigns.
ICON’s own decommissioning capability spans planning and engineering, late-life facilities management, platform and wellhead removal, and floating systems abandonment — the same set of disciplines touched on in the presentation to the Petrobras delegation.
Building international relationships
Visits like this are part of how ICON maintains the kind of long-term client relationships it’s known for. Repeat engagement with major international operators, rather than one-off project wins, has been central to ICON’s growth since it was founded in Perth in 1997, and hosting delegations from operators as significant as Petrobras is one visible sign of that ongoing relationship-building.
